LOS ANGELES—On Tuesday, March 16th at 5:00 p.m., KNBC-TV 4 Los Angeles featured Dorsey High School’s “Cooking Our Way to the White House” story. The Barack Obama Digital Media Team at Crenshaw High School and Dorsey High’s Culinary Arts partners have been working hard to turn their dream of visiting the White House into reality. Non-profit organization, Mother of Many (M.O.M.) is preparing high school students for colleges and careers with certificate programs as outlined by President Obama for students’ development.

M.O.M. students learn digital media production skills and earn Apple iLife and Final Cut Pro Program Certification. The partnership with the Dorsey Culinary Arts Program provides endless opportunities to feature cooking shows and events. Last week, the Dorsey High Culinary Arts students prepared the same healthy dishes they made for volunteers working for the 2008 Obama campaign and the Digital Media Team recorded the event.

“We are so grateful for the support we receive from community leaders, our corporate partner, Ogilvy and Mather West, The Squid and Squash Foundation, the University of Southern California and, the notable support of students’ parents and friends. Together we raised travel funds and worked hard for our dream to visit the White House,” says Daphne Bradford Apple Distinguished Educator and Founder of Mother of Many.

Mother of Many (M.O.M.) is a non-profit grassroots organization focused on inspiring high school students to improve their grades, stay in school and earn various digital media certifications beginning with iLife, Apple’s award winning digital media software and Final Cut Pro in 9th through 12th grade. In a learning environment where dropping out and failing to meet high school exit exam standards are an unfortunate reality, Mother of Many is committed to assisting young people to reverse that trend by taking responsibility for their education.

OgilvyWest, Los Angeles operates Ogilvy Advantage, a program offering Mother Of Many digital media students access to advertising creative and production professionals on-site at the agency and in studios with Ogilvy’s creative production partners. Summer internships and opportunities for hands-on experience are a critical element of the Ogilvy Advantage program providing invaluable on-the-job experiences for future media arts professionals.

They call themselves the Barack Obama Digital Media Team. They are all students at Crenshaw and Dorsey High Schools in Los Angeles, and under the direction of their teacher, Apple Distinguished Educator Daphne Bradford, they have organized an all-out effort to win an invitation from the First Family.

They call it their Journey to the White House campaign, and they are giving it their “all” and then some.

The Barack Obama Student Digital Media team recorded video letters to the President aboard the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a one-of-a-kind non-profit multimedia studio where the Black Eyed Peas, Natasha Bedingfield and other recording artists have laid tracks.

The Crenshaw BarackBand wrote and produced a Journey to the White House theme song.

“I would like to give the President an iPhoto lesson and show him how we take pictures and create Podcasts,” says Crenshaw High School student Mia Henry who has just received her Apple iLife Certification Award. “I’d also tell him of my dreams to go to college so I can work with autistic children as a child psychologist.”

Bradford also established a Culinary Arts partnership with the Culinary Arts Department at Dorsey High School.
Dorsey Culinary Arts students prepared daily nutritious lunch meals for faithful Obama volunteers during several crucial weeks of the Presidential campaign. Impressed with the culinary skills of the Dorsey students, Bradford launched Cooking Live with Dorsey High, a web-based cooking show featured on www.studentnewsdesk.com.

Cooking Live with Dorsey High chefs prepare various healthy meals and deserts for students, teachers and various community events.

You can read a lot more about about these remarkable students, their equally remarkable teacher, and their campaign to visit the Obamas, and you can watch their video letters to the President, at www.whitehousejourney.com
